We’re currently closed for general, preventive, and cosmetic treatments, but our team is still providing emergency dentistry for our patients in Baxter, MN, and surrounding communities. But what is a dental emergency, and when should you contact our team to discuss possible treatment? What steps do we take to ensure your health and safety when you visit our office?
Common Dental Emergency Scenarios
Basically, a dental emergency refers to any damage or serious discomfort that occurs in and around your teeth and gums. If the issue is potentially life-threatening, then you should call 911. Otherwise, give our office a call so you can describe your issue and we can schedule a time to see you. Common examples of a dental emergency include teeth that have become cracked, chipped, or seriously broken. A knocked-out tooth is also cause for concern, as is a toothache or pain when eating, as this could point to advanced tooth decay or even an infected tooth. If you have something stuck between your teeth that you cannot remove with floss, let us know. We also address loose or lost fillings or crowns.
Responding to Your Injury
For damaged teeth, rinse with warm water and then take a pain reliever. Use a washcloth or piece of gauze to stem the bleeding. To avoid facial swelling, place a cold compress or ice pack against the side of your face. If your tooth is knocked out completely, pick it up by the crown (never touch the root) and place it in a glass of milk or salt water, bringing it with you. If you have a loose or lost restoration, avoid sugary foods and drinks as the teeth will be very sensitive. Finally, if something is stuck between your teeth, try again to remove it only using floss, and then rinse with warm water.
Potential Treatment Options
If you have a loose or lost restoration, then we can replace it to protect your tooth from further discomfort or complications. If a tooth is damaged, we could address minor injuries in one visit with dental bonding, or even create and place a dental crown. If you have pain due to a cavity or infection, we could place a filling or perform a root canal to restore the tooth to optimal health, function, and beauty. When you visit our office, we will clean and disinfect surfaces in between each visit, and schedule appointments to ensure you’re not sharing the waiting room.
