Did you know that poor oral hygiene could lead to a higher risk of gum inflammation, also known as gingivitis, and periodontal disease? Unless treated or managed, this could in turn increase your risk of losing teeth to periodontitis! In today’s blog, your Baxter, MN, dentist is talking about the steps you can take to improve your oral health from home.
The Causes of Gum Disease
In order to protect your smile, you need to understand what leaves your smile vulnerable to periodontal issues. For example, the initial inflammation, known as gingivitis, could be caused by poor oral hygiene habits, which causes plaque to accumulate and irritate the gum tissues. In addition, inflammation could be caused by inflammatory illnesses, specific medications, tobacco use, or a family history of poor periodontal health. Warning signs of trouble may include sore, red gums that bleed easily.
While gingivitis can be reversed with deep cleanings and other treatments, gum disease cannot be cured and instead, must be managed with routine care both at-home and in-office to prevent periodontitis and adult tooth loss. However, with better at-home care, you limit your risks of developing periodontal disease. You should brush your teeth when you first wake for two minutes, using a toothpaste with fluoride. Try to avoid brushes with hard or medium bristles, to prevent inadvertently irritating your gums if you brush too hard. You should do the same at night, and also floss up and down the length of each tooth, dipping below the gum line to reach and remove trapped particles of food. You also need to cut back on sugary foods and drinks, which feed harmful bacteria.
When to Seek Treatment
