In our last blog, we explained how minor tooth loss could be addressed successfully with a dental bridge. But what if you have a more severe case of tooth loss, missing most or all of your teeth? In today’s blog, your Baxter, MN, dentist looks at how we can create a partial or full denture that looks natural and fits comfortably.
The Health Risks of Advanced Tooth Loss
Losing a large number of your teeth could cause serious complications for your appearance and oral health. First, this could impact how you eat and force you to rely mainly on soft foods, depriving you of not only your favorite meals, but essential nutrients too. You could also have difficulty speaking clearly, which leads to issues with social interactions. The remaining teeth could drift from position due to the gaps in your smile, causing misalignment too. With a prosthetic, we have the opportunity to restore your ability to eat and speak with ease, and protecting the position of any remaining teeth as well.
Partial Dentures
If you have several gaps spread throughout the smile, but not enough to require a full denture (and too much for a bridge) then you may need a partial. We take detailed impressions of your smile, using the images we gather to design and create a prosthetic that fits comfortably. The partial contains an acrylic base, which looks like gum tissue, and lifelike replacement teeth. Metal clasps will attach to the natural teeth and anchor your new ones in place. The prosthetic last about 5 to 10 years, requiring replacement as the jaw ridge changes shape with time.
Full Dentures
A full replaces every tooth on one or both arches. Again, this is designed with detailed impressions and images to ensure a proper fit that reflects your unique facial structure and offers comfort and stability. The prosthetic will have an acrylic base, but this time a full row of new teeth. Suction, and possibly the assistance of a special adhesive, will anchor it in place. Both the full and partial will need to be removed for cleaning and soaking, and can provide up to 10 years of use before requiring adjustment or replacement. If you have any questions about tooth loss, or preserving your smile, let us know. We’re also here to address your tooth loss, whether minor or severe, with a strong and lifelike dental prosthetic. Let us know if you have lost even a single missing tooth!
