To help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect members of our community, our office is closed for preventive and cosmetic treatments. However, we’re still available for emergency care on a case-by-case basis! But just because you’re stuck at home, doesn’t mean you should ignore your smile’s health. In today’s blog, your Baxter, MN, dentist looks at how to protect your smile from home.
The Causes of Issues Like Cavities and Gum Disease
Often a combination of our diets and poor oral hygiene lead to the onset of issues like cavities or gum disease. When we consume foods and drinks with lots of sugar or starch, this leaves behind particles for harmful bacteria to consume, a process that leads to oral acidity and teeth coated in plaque buildup. When we don’t brush and floss, the particles remain and the plaque buildup worsens with time. Soon, the buildup could weaken and erode enamel, leading to cavities, or inflamed gum tissues to boost the risk of gingivitis and gum disease. Warning signs of trouble often includes aching or sensitive teeth, or sore, bleeding gums.
Brushing and Flossing Your Teeth
To help, you should start your day by brushing your teeth for about two minutes using a toothpaste that contains fluoride. You should do so again before bed, and also flossing in between each tooth to remove trapped food particles. These steps reduce the severity of plaque buildup and protect the health of your smile. We also suggest cutting back on sugary foods and drinks, instead enjoying more fruits and veggies, cheese and yogurts, nuts and trail mixes, and items like sugar-free gum.
