greenhaven fillingWhen a patient develops a cavity we recommend the issue be treated as soon as possible. Without treatment, cavities can lead to serious complications. In order to restore the tooth to full function and health we may prescribe a dental filling. When do you need a filling? How do you know if you have tooth decay?

Frequently Asked Questions About Fillings

Question: How do you know if you have a cavity?

Answer: You may notice tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. You may also encounter a persistent toothache that doesn’t subside. You should talk to your dentist about any discomfort, as this could be a sign of trouble. Checkups every six months can also allow a dentist to identify the presence of decay in the earliest stages.

Question: When will the doctor recommend metal fillings?

Answer: Metal restorations are made from a mix, or amalgam, of certain metals. Due to their strength, we typically recommend these for the rear teeth, as they must undergo serious bite forces and pressures. However, we don’t typically recommend them for people with metal allergies or who are pregnant.

Question: Can fillings ever be tooth-colored?

Answer: Yes. We can use tooth-colored composite resin to place more lifelike and metal-free restorations. These are typically prescribed for the more visible front teeth.

Question: What happens if I don’t have my cavity treated?

Answer: Without treatment the decay will continue to spread, eventually increasing the risk of an infection developing. You will need a root canal to address the infection, otherwise you could end up losing the tooth completely.
